VACCINATE TO PREVENT DISEASE!
Vaccination in horses can be commenced from 3 months of age.
Tetanus (Clostridium tetani)-ESSENTIAL VACCINE
- Tetanus rapidly causes death by spasm of the muscles and respiratory paralysis
- Present in the ground and can infect wounds, hoof abcesses or surgical incisions
- Initial course – 2 intramuscular injections administered 4 weeks apart
- Annual boosters
Strangles (Streptococcus Equi)-ESSENTIAL VACCINE
- Strangles causes infection of the throat region causing high temperatures and abcessation of the glands under the jaw
- Highly infectious
- Initial course – 3 intramuscular injections administered 2 weeks apart
- Boosters are required at 6 monthly intervals for efficacy.
Tetanus/Strangles 2 in 1 –ESSENTIAL VACCINE
- Combined Tetanus and Strangles vaccine
- For complete protection the best protocol for the initial course is 3 intramuscular injections 2 weeks apart:
- 2 in 1 intramuscular injection
- Two week interval
- Strangles booster intramuscular injection
- Two week interval
- 2 in 1 intramuscular injection
- Annual boosters
Tetanus Anti-Toxin (TAT)
- For short term protection and treatment of Tetanus in unvaccinated animals
- Unvaccinated horses should be administered a TAT should they suffer a wound or hoof abcess as these are common causes of tetanus.
- Administered subcutaneously
Hendra Virus – ESSENTIAL VACCINE FOR HORSES TRAVELLING TO QLD AND NORTHERN NSW
- Hendra Virus is a disease transmitted by bats and flying foxes that is rapidly fatal in horses, and is transmissible to humans where it also causes rapid death.
- Primary course consists of 2 vaccinations 3-6 weeks apart followed by a 6 monthly booster
- Annual boosters
- Horse must be microchipped in order to be vaccinated for Hendra Virus
- Hendra Vaccine can only be administered by a veterinarian
- All vaccinations entered on a national database so that the vaccination status of horses can be readily checked in the face of a potential Hendra Virus infection or for competition health and safety purposes.
- Unvaccinated horses travelling to QLD or Northern NSW for competition may be required to be vaccinated under competition rules.
- Unvaccinated horses in QLD or Northern NSW may be denied urgent veterinary care until exclusion test results for Hendra Virus are obtained, and many equine hospitals will not accept unvaccinated horses for surgical or other invasive procedures for human safety reasons.
Duvaxyn EHV-1,4- OPTIONAL VACCINE
- Herpes virus causes respiratory disease and viral abortion in horses
- Can be administered from 5 months age
- Primary course is 2 intramuscular injections 4-6 weeks apart
- 6 monthly boosters
- Pregnant mares can be administered the vaccine at 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy to help reduce the risk of viral abortion
Salmonella – OPTIONAL VACCINE
- Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause severe diarrhoea in foals and adult horses
- Can be administered from 4 months of age
- Primary course is 2 injections 4 weeks apart, (followed by a booster at 6 months in foals under 12 months of age)
- Pregnant mares that have already had the primary course should be given a booster 6 weeks before foaling.
- Annual boosters
