McGregor Equine Veterinary Services offers and experienced and comprehensive range of equine reproduction services to horse owners on the Mornington Peninsula and its surrounding areas.

REPRODUCTION

Fresh, Chilled and Frozen AI procedures can be performed on your mare, along with more specialised procedures such as Embryo Transfer.

For Stallion owners, we provide a semen collection service and are able to co-ordinate with our couriers to send your stallion’s semen throughout Australia as required. We also offer semen evaluation services and freezing.

An experienced stallion handler is available to handle your stallion if required, and we also provide a stallion training service for young stallions who require training to collect for AI.

Our hospital has facilities for Neonatal Intensive Care of sick or injured foals that require intensive assistance after birth, in addition to facilities for fostering of orphan foals.

AMBULATORY

We provide a comprehensive on-farm equine reproductive service for all equine breeding stock on the Mornington Peninsula and surrounding areas, and cater to both commercial studs & hobby breeders alike.

Natural cover, walk-on breeds, and chilled AI services can be provided to you on farm if your facilities allow. For those clients lacking a breeding crush, we recommend you transport your mares to our fully equipped clinic for safety and economy reasons.

Mares requiring Frozen AI are required to stay overnight at the clinic for a minimum of 48 hours for breeding, allowing us to monitor and accurately time their insemination.

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE

McGregor Equine Veterinary Services provides 24-hour intensive equine veterinary care for sick foals in our dedicated neonatal intensive care unit.

Sick foals require early intervention and a high level of veterinary care to maximise the possibility of a successful outcome, and often around-the-clock nursing and supportive therapy are required.

We have designated mare and foal boxes and an experienced team that also allow us to provide expert care to orphan foals that require fostering, foals with standing and suckling difficulties, or foals with other problems such as sepsis or joint ill.

FOALING

McGregor Equine Veterinary Services provides dedicated 24-hour on call equine reproduction veterinarians that will assist your mare should she require it whilst foaling.

As most mares will foal at night, we request that new clients with mares due to foal contact the clinic to register prior to our services being required, and that existing clients contact us to alert us when their mare is due so that we are given the opportunity to prepare for any emergency that may arise.

McGregor Equine does not offer a routine foaling down service at the clinic, however will foal down high-risk mares or mares which are likely to require veterinary assistance by special arrangement.

FOAL ALARM HIRE

A limited number of foal alarms are available for hire, please phone the clinic to reserve.

CHILLED AI

Breeding mares by Chilled AI enables clients to breed their mare to any stallion throughout Australia.

The mare’s cycle is regularly monitored via rectal ultrasound examination until her follicle reaches a size optimal for insemination.

Semen is then ordered from the designated stallion, who is then collected by the stallion owner/vet. The semen is then extended, placed in a specialised semen shipper that cools the semen, and shipped to the clinic or farm by courier.

Ideally the semen is then inseminated into the mare either the same day as the collection, or at the latest the following day. Ovulatory drugs are often administered to the mare to ensure she ovulates at a time which will maximise her chance of pregnancy.

The success rate of Chilled AI is dependent on the fertility of the mare and stallion, but is usually equivalent to that of natural service and has approximately a 70-90% conception rate.

FROZEN AI

Frozen AI allows clients to breed their mare to any stallion from throughout the world.

Semen is collected from a stallion in advance, and frozen into small straws which are then stored in liquid nitrogen tanks until a dose is required for breeding.

The mare’s cycle is regularly monitored via rectal ultrasound examination until her follicle reaches a size optimal for insemination. The mare is then administered ovulatory drugs to schedule her for ovulation, at which point frequent ultrasound examinations are required, sometimes as often as every 2 hours around the time of scheduled ovulation.

The insemination is timed to be as close to ovulation as possible, and once the mare has ovulated the frozen semen is thawed in a water bath and inseminated into the mare.

The success rate for frozen AI depends on the fertility of the mare & stallion and ranges from a 30-50% conception rate.

EMBRYO TRANSFER

Embryo Transfer is the process whereby a 7-8 day equine embryo is transferred out of a donor mare into a surrogate or recipient mare, who will carry the pregnancy to term and then nurse the foal as her own.

Donor mares are often valuable competition mare who are still being used for competition purposes, mares with reproductive difficulties, or mares that a client wishes to breed more than one foal per season.

The donor mare is bred as per normal via natural service, chilled AI or frozen AI. An appropriate recipient mare is identified via a similar ultrasonographic monitoring process, and is a mare whose cycle closely matches or is synchronous with that of the donor mare.

On day 7 (Chilled AI) or day 8 (Frozen AI), the donor mare is flushed to retrieve any microscopic embryos that might be present. The embryo is then transferred into the recipient mare, who is pregnancy tested via ultrasound a week later. The mare then carries the foal as if it were her own, and is returned to the clinic once the foal is weaned between 4 and 6 months of age.

SEMEN COLLECTION & STALLION TRAINING

McGregor Equine Veterinary Services provides a comprehensive semen collection and stallion training service at the clinic.

Stallions are trained to collect off our dummy breeding mount, and we also have a “jump mare” who we ensure is always in season to assist us with collections and or stallion training.

Our farm manager, Simon Lee, is an expert horseman who is able to assist with stallion handling and training for both semen collection and natural cover when required.

Semen can be collected for both chilled and frozen AI purposes, and transported by courier to a required destination throughout Australia for insemination.
